Smelt Run Is ON !!

[USED W PERMISSION]  In the 1960s, this is where you’d’ve found me. This photo spread by Bob Kind that appeared in the Duluth News Tribune May 7th 2018 captures the experience almost as good as actually being there. Every stream, creek, and rivlet feeding into Lake Superior has a smelt spawning run… Good times, better, even. than eating the smelt.

And by the way, this kind of reporting happens every day at a few places in the country – and seems especially true of newspapers in the upper midwest.

“Several dozen people use nets to fish for smelt Sunday night at the mouth of the Lester River. Depending on weather and water temperature, smelt runs in North Shore rivers could last for another couple weeks. Photos by Bob King”

Reminds me of Pieter Brueghel the Elder’s work.
