Auguries of Innocence by Wm Blake

Auguries of Innocence

By William Blake

To see a World in a Grain of Sand

And a Heaven in a Wild Flower

Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand

And Eternity in an hour

A Robin Red breast in a Cage

Puts all Heaven in a Rage

A Dove house filld with Doves & Pigeons

Shudders Hell thr’ all its regions

A dog starvd at his Masters Gate

Predicts the ruin of the State

A Horse misusd upon the Road

Calls to Heaven for Human blood

Each outcry of the hunted Hare

A fibre from the Brain does tear

A Skylark wounded in the wing

A Cherubim does cease to sing

The Game Cock clipd & armd for fight

Does the Rising Sun affright

Every Wolfs & Lions howl

Raises from Hell a Human Soul

The wild deer, wandring here & there

Keeps the Human Soul from Care

The Lamb misusd breeds Public Strife

And yet forgives the Butchers knife

The Bat that flits at close of Eve

Has left the Brain that wont Believe

The Owl that calls upon the Night

Speaks the Unbelievers fright

He who shall hurt the little Wren

Shall never be belovd by Men

He who the Ox to wrath has movd

Shall never be by Woman lovd

The wanton Boy that kills the Fly

Shall feel the Spiders enmity

He who torments the Chafers Sprite

Weaves a Bower in endless Night

The Catterpiller on the Leaf

Repeats to thee thy Mothers grief

Kill not the Moth nor Butterfly

For the Last Judgment draweth nigh

He who shall train the Horse to War

Shall never pass the Polar Bar

The Beggars Dog & Widows Cat

Feed them & thou wilt grow fat

The Gnat that sings his Summers Song

Poison gets from Slanders tongue

The poison of the Snake & Newt

Is the sweat of Envys Foot

The poison of the Honey Bee

Is the Artists Jealousy

The Princes Robes & Beggars Rags

Are Toadstools on the Misers Bags

A Truth thats told with bad intent

Beats all the Lies you can invent

It is right it should be so

Man was made for Joy & Woe

And when this we rightly know

Thro the World we safely go

Joy & Woe are woven fine

A Clothing for the soul divine

Under every grief & pine

Runs a joy with silken twine

The Babe is more than swadling Bands

Throughout all these Human Lands

Tools were made & Born were hands

Every Farmer Understands

Every Tear from Every Eye

Becomes a Babe in Eternity

This is caught by Females bright

And returnd to its own delight

The Bleat the Bark Bellow & Roar

Are Waves that Beat on Heavens Shore

The Babe that weeps the Rod beneath

Writes Revenge in realms of Death

The Beggars Rags fluttering in Air

Does to Rags the Heavens tear

The Soldier armd with Sword & Gun

Palsied strikes the Summers Sun

The poor Mans Farthing is worth more

Than all the Gold on Africs Shore

One Mite wrung from the Labrers hands

Shall buy & sell the Misers Lands

Or if protected from on high

Does that whole Nation sell & buy

He who mocks the Infants Faith

Shall be mockd in Age & Death

He who shall teach the Child to Doubt

The rotting Grave shall neer get out

He who respects the Infants faith

Triumphs over Hell & Death

The Childs Toys & the Old Mans Reasons

Are the Fruits of the Two seasons

The Questioner who sits so sly

Shall never know how to Reply

He who replies to words of Doubt

Doth put the Light of Knowledge out

The Strongest Poison ever known

Came from Caesars Laurel Crown

Nought can Deform the Human Race

Like to the Armours iron brace

When Gold & Gems adorn the Plow

To peaceful Arts shall Envy Bow

A Riddle or the Crickets Cry

Is to Doubt a fit Reply

The Emmets Inch & Eagles Mile

Make Lame Philosophy to smile

He who Doubts from what he sees

Will neer Believe do what you Please

If the Sun & Moon should Doubt

Theyd immediately Go out

To be in a Passion you Good may Do

But no Good if a Passion is in you

The Whore & Gambler by the State

Licencd build that Nations Fate

The Harlots cry from Street to Street

Shall weave Old Englands winding Sheet

The Winners Shout the Losers Curse

Dance before dead Englands Hearse

Every Night & every Morn

Some to Misery are Born

Every Morn and every Night

Some are Born to sweet delight

Some are Born to sweet delight

Some are Born to Endless Night

We are led to Believe a Lie

When we see not Thro the Eye

Which was Born in a Night to perish in a Night

When the Soul Slept in Beams of Light

God Appears & God is Light

To those poor Souls who dwell in Night

But does a Human Form Display

To those who Dwell in Realms of day

Top HHS official accuses scientists of plotting against Trump, tells supporters to buy ammunition

By Nathaniel Weixel – 09/14/20 01:18 PM EDT
The top communications official at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) accused career government scientists of plotting against President Trump and told Trump supporters to arm themselves ahead of the November presidential election.

In a Facebook Live on Sunday, Michael Caputo said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was harboring a “resistance unit” to Trump, The New York Times reported.

The career scientists “haven’t gotten out of their sweatpants except for meetings at coffee shops” to plot “how they’re going to attack Donald Trump,” Caputo said, according to the Times. “There are scientists who work for this government who do not want America to get well, not until after Joe Biden is president.”

Caputo reportedly hosted the event for followers of his personal Facebook page. His comments came after Politico first reported on Friday that top political HHS appointees have been interfering with the publication of CDC’s reports on the pandemic.

Top House Democrats have now launched an investigation of the matter.

According to the Times, Caputo also warned Trump’s followers to be prepared for an armed insurrection when Democratic nominee Joe Biden refuses to concede the election.

“When Donald Trump refuses to stand down at the inauguration, the shooting will begin,” Caputo said. “If you carry guns, buy ammunition, ladies and gentlemen, because it’s going to be hard to get.”

In a statement, HHS said “Mr. Caputo is a critical, integral part of the President’s coronavirus response, leading on public messaging as Americans need public health information to defeat the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Caputo, a Trump loyalist who was installed as top spokesman at the agency in April, gave no evidence for any of his claims. But the attacks follow a pattern of top administration officials, and even Trump himself, blaming shadowy figures inside the government for the president’s coronavirus response.

Last month, Trump without evidence accused the “Deep State” at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for slowing COVID vaccine trials.

“The deep state, or whoever, over at the FDA is making it very difficult for drug companies to get people in order to test the vaccines and therapeutics,” Trump tweeted.

According to The Times, Caputo echoed those claims to his Facebook followers, saying scientists “deep in the bowels of the CDC have given up science and become political animals.”

The CDC is typically an apolitical institution staffed by career scientists. The agency’s headquarters are in Atlanta, not D.C., in an effort to avoid the type of political pressure to which it is now being accused of succumbing.

In the remarks, Caputo veered from attacking scientists to accusing the far-left “antifa” of plotting an attack on Trump supporters.

“Remember the Trump supporter who was shot and killed?” he said. “That was a drill.”

One person was singled out for praise amidst the attacks, the Times said: CDC Director Robert Redfield.

Redfield “is one of my closest friends in Washington,” Captuo said. “He’s such a good man.”

Musk Says Tesla Will Produce ‘Super Efficient Home HVAC’ With HEPA Filtering

[slash/dot]Posted by BeauHD on Sat Sept 12, 2020 from the perfect-for-wildfire-season dept.
An anonymous reader quotes a report from TechCrunch: Elon Musk has previously touted the “Bioweapon Defense Mode” boasted by Tesla’s vehicles, which are designed to provide excellent air quality inside the car even in the face of disastrous conditions without, thanks in part to high-efficiency HEPA air filtration. Now, Musk has said on Twitter that he hopes to one day provide similar air filtration along with home HVAC systems.

Tesla, while primarily an automaker, is also already in the business of home energy and power generation, thanks to its acquisition of SolarCity, its current production of solar roofing products and its business building Tesla batteries for storage of power generated from green sources at home. While it hasn’t yet seemed to make any moves to enter into any other parts of home building or infrastructure, HVAC systems actually would be a logical extension of its business, since they represent a significant part of the overall energy consumption of a home, depending on its heating and cooling sources. Boosting home HVAC efficiency would have the added benefit of making Tesla’s other home energy products more appealing to consumers, since it would presumably help make it easier to achieve true off-grid (or near off-grid) self-sufficiency.

Trio of medications showing early promise against coronavirus, UF Health researchers find

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The race to find effective treatments for COVID-19 isn’t just about developing new drugs. University of Florida Health scientists are studying a trio of existing medications known to have broad antiviral activity.

Two drugs have shown promising results in suppressing the Sars-CoV-2 virus (COVID-19) in initial tests on human colon and lung cells that were infected with the coronavirus. The third has shown some antiviral activity but was generally less effective than the other two compounds, the researchers found.

The researchers are focusing on the three drugs because they already have federal approval for use against other viral diseases or have undergone prior testing as an antiviral therapy, said Ashley Brown, an associate professor in the UF College of Medicine and an affiliated associate professor in the UF College of Pharmacy.

“We chose to research these drugs for effectiveness against COVID-19 because they have the most promise for broad-spectrum antiviral activity,” Brown said.

The drugs are known as nucleoside polymerase inhibitors, or NUCS. The ones being studied as a SARS-CoV-2 therapy are galidesivir, remdesivir and favipiravir. Remdesivir was already being used on an emergency basis for severely ill, hospitalized COVID-19 patients. In late August, the drug’s manufacturer got U.S. Food and Drug Administration to use the treatment on all hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

Brown is collaborating with Jürgen Bulitta, a professor of pharmacotherapy and translational research in the College of Pharmacy and Dr. George Drusano, a professor in the College of Medicine.

The three NUCs being studied at UF work this way: During the viral replication process, the drug compound is picked up and incorporated into the virus’s newly formed genetic material. That action — a genetic mistake of sorts — halts the genetic replication process and terminates the virus, Brown said. The compounds can also cause a latent genetic mutation within the virus that prevents it from replicating.

Favipirivir is an oral antiviral that was developed in Japan to fight influenza. Galidesivir was originally designed as a hepatitis C treatment but has been shown in animal studies to increase survival rates from infections caused by the Ebola and Zika viruses and others.

So far, two of the drugs — remdesivir and galidesivir — have shown noteworthy activity in suppressing the virus, Brown said. Favipirivir has been less effective than the other two compounds.

Identifying drugs that are effective against the Sars-CoV-2 virus is just the first step. The researchers also have to determine an optimal dose and how many times it can be given safely. Gathering data and developing protocols are steps toward a potential clinical trial.

“We want to determine the dosing regimen that produces the fastest recovery and the least toxicity for the patient,” said Bulitta, who also serves as the Perry A. Foote Eminent Scholar Chair in the College of Pharmacy. “Fortunately, UF has state-of-the-art technology and experts in experimental and mathematical modeling approaches. These capabilities enable us to come up with a scientifically sound and mechanistically informed dosing regimen on a very rapid basis to combat the crisis.”

Ideally, Brown said, any therapy developed from the research could be given intravenously to people who have fully developed COVID-19 and as an oral therapy for those who test positive for the virus.

Bulitta said conceiving of and executing the drug studies in a short time frame is a testament to the power of collaboration at UF.

“With Dr. Brown’s work on the antiviral efficacy studies, my team’s involvement in developing novel assays for intracellular concentration measurements and the combined effort of Dr. Drusano and myself working on the mathematical modeling, we’ve made it our mission to develop an effective therapy against SARS-CoV-2,” he said.

The research work is being carried out at the UF Institute for Therapeutic Innovation, a research hub in Orlando that is part of the UF College of Medicine’s department of medicine. Funding for the research is being provided by the UF Clinical and Translational Science Institute. Earlier this year, the institute established a $2 million fund to support research intiatives that have a near-term impact on the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of COVID-19 or the Sars-CoV-2 virus.

Oral Sustained-Release Morphine May Improve Moderate, Severe Breathlessness in COPD – Pulmonology Advisor

Oral Sustained-Release Morphine May Improve Moderate, Severe Breathlessness in COPD

Sheila Jacobs 9/2/2020

The use of regular, low-dose, oral sustained-release morphine for 4 weeks in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and moderate to very severe breathlessness has been shown to improve disease-specific health status, with no effect on arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2) or serious adverse events.

Researchers conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study (Morphine for Treatment of Dyspnea in Patients With COPD [MORDYC]; ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT02429050) and the results were published in JAMA Internal Medicine.

Investigators sought to evaluate the effects of using regular, low-dose, oral sustained-release morphine on patients’ disease-specific health status (ie, COPD Assessment Test [CAT]), breathlessness, and respiratory outcomes. All study participants were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatment groups: regular, oral sustained-release morphine 10 mg or placebo twice daily for a period of 4 weeks, with the possibility of increasing the dosing to 3 times daily after 1 or 2 weeks.

Patients were enrolled in the MORDYC study between November 1, 2016, and January 24, 2019. Following completion of a pulmonary rehabilitation program, the participants were recruited from a pulmonary rehabilitation center and 2 general hospitals. Those outpatients who had COPD and moderate to very severe breathlessness of grades 2 to 4, per modified Medical Research Council (mMRC), despite optimal pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapy, were included in the study.

After screening, a total of 111 of the 124 eligible participants were analyzed. The mean participant age was 65.4±8.0 years and 54% were men. The difference in CAT scores was 2.18 points lower in the morphine group compared with the placebo group, which was statistically significant (95% CI, -4.14 to -0.22 points; P =.03). In the subgroup of patients with mMRC grades 3 to 4, the difference between the 2 treatment groups was not statistically significant (-1.17 points; 95% CI, -4.17 to 1.84 points; P =.44).

With respect to change in PaCO2, no significant differences were shown between the 2 groups (1.19 mm Hg higher in the morphine arm; 95% CI, -2.70 to 5.07 mm Hg; P =.55). Additionally, the subgroup of individuals with mMRC grades 3 to 4 demonstrated no clinically relevant or significant differences in PaCO2 (1.84 mm Hg; 95% CI, -4.95 to

8.64 mm Hg; P =.59). Although breathlessness remained unchanged, the worst breathlessness improved significantly in those participants with mMRC grades 3 to 4 (1.33 points lower in the morphine group; 95% CI, -2.50 to -0.16; P =.03).

Overall, 9% (5 of 54) of the participants treated with morphine and 2% (1 of 57) of the participants given placebo withdrew from the study because of adverse events. There were no morphine-related deaths or hospital admissions reported.

The investigators concluded that their findings demonstrate a role for morphine in the palliative treatment of chronic breathlessness in patients with COPD. Additional studies with >4 weeks of follow-up are warranted to evaluate the long-term effects and safety of morphine in this patient population.
