Putting your body -and money- where your mouth is, Emma Thompson edition

Actor Emma Thompson, right, in yellow top, pays a visit to the Ilisaqsivik Society during a recent visit to the North Baffin community of about 1,000 people. Thompson and her daughter Gaia spent nearly two weeks in Clyde River as part of a Greenpeace visit to install solar panels on the community hall and support the community’s stand against seismic testing for undersea hydrocarbons off Baffin’s east coast. That fight goes to the Supreme Court of Canada in November. Ilisaqsivik is an award-winning society that runs numerous programs for all members of the community from children and new moms to men’s groups and elders. They also run a social enterprise called the Naujaaraaluit Hotel which, through its subsidiary company, Tukumaaq Inc., funnels profits to the society. According to the society’s Facebook page, Thompson met with staff, learned about the programs and even participated in some traditional games. (ILISAQSIVIK FACEBOOK PHOTO)

Justin Trudeau on Burkinis

“We should be past tolerance in Canada… In Canada, can we speak of acceptance, openness, friendship, understanding? It is about where we are going and

what we are going through every day in our diverse and rich communities,” he said, before dropping a dose of irony: “Tolerating someone means accepting their right to exist on the condition that they don’t disturb us too, too much.”

Trudeau also pointed out that “the respect of individual rights and choices” should be key in matters such as these. This is such an important distinction to make because, in case you need a reminder, women’s rights aren’t just about the right to strip down. They also encompass a woman’s right to cover up.

Essentially, to wear whatever makes her feel comfortable.
